We have begun to share some past travel experiences, including adventures taken before the COVID-19 shutdown. A number of our writers have shared their crisis experiences as well.

Kew Gardens   KEW GARDENS: London’s Amazing Botanical Kingdom by Lee Juillerat
Kew is known for housing the “largest and most diverse botanical and mycological collections in the world.” As we learned, seeing is believing. Even after a full day of meandering about Kew Garden’s 300 acres, we were nowhere near satiated.

WINTER MERRIMENT in a Wacky World
by Vicki Hoefling Andersen

I’d never discourage anyone from choosing lift-served turns, but there are all sorts of options for snow play that can be enjoyed as the notion arises, on a solo basis or with a friend along to share the adventure.

GEAR REVIEW by Lynn Rosen

We plugged our favorite paleblueearth.com batteries into our favorite rechargeable eggtronics.com charger in a double effort to both spend time outdoors away from the grid and to save the planet.

Fisher   PYRAMID LAKE, NEVADA, and OTHER EXPLORATIONS by Larry Turner

Pyramid Lake is part of the Paiute Tribal Land where fishing and other activities on and around the lake are regulated by the native Paiutes. It is famous for fishing the ancient (two million years old) Lahontan cutthroat trout, so named by the distinctive red coloration on the lower jaw.

TRADITIONAL ICELANDIC FOOD
by Yvette Cardozo

Nothing is more dear to an Icelander than food and in February, after a damp, dark winter where genetic instinct has been screaming, "eat!!!" it all comes to a head in the frenzy of the Thorrablöt festival.

North Country’s The Oldest Ski Shop in America

One hundred-year-old businesses don’t exist. The retail industry is dead. In the rugged White Mountains of northern New Hampshire, Lahout’s has remained open 365 days a year since 1920. While e-commerce and conglomerates have stripped the country of local, independent retailers, a family of Lebanese immigrants has prevailed for a century, beating the Great Depression, World War II, the Dot Com Crash and Great Recession.

Award-winning director Nick Martini and cinematographer Cam Riley have teamed up with executive producer Anthony Lahout to captivate a nation consumed with hashtags instead of history. This film tells a timeless short story of the American dream and the family that put a community on skis. After 100 years, Lahout’s is still a family business moving onto its fourth generation. Through past and present, we learn the true root of the store's success.
We hope to inspire immigrants, millennials, family businesses, and outdoor enthusiasts that all in America is not lost.
