WHEN YOU GO: The French Riviera

Getting There: Depending on your U.S. departing city, airlines to Nice International Airport include Delta, KLM, Lufthansa, SAS, Sabena, Swissair, and United Airlines. All flights require a transfer from another European city, except for a direct Delta flight from New York City. The 800 phone numbers to these airlines and flight-finding Web links can be found in High On Adventure’s Travel Info section.

You can also fly into Paris and take the TGV train, a six hour trip, to Saint Raphael. Alternatively, you can fly into Milan, Italy and take the train through Genoa to the French Riviera via transfers within a single day.

Major car rental agencies in Nice and Saint Raphael include Auto Europe, Europe By Car, and Hertz, which also have 800 phone numbers and rental car Web links listed in the Travel Info section. Michelin Map 115 is the most detailed road map of the region. A strongly recommended guide book for planning your itineraries in the French Riviera is Michelin Green Guide: French Riviera. This book includes detailed town and site maps, history, and loads of practical information on the region. Fodor’s France has a good chapter devoted to the French Riviera, including suggestions for lodging and dining. Both books are accessible through the Travel Bookstore.

Staying There:

Beaulieu sur Mer:

With the reduced prices of September and October, why not stay right along the sea? We found that the Residence Eiffel, a two-story residence apartment complex on the Eiffel estate, was very quiet, with a pool, lawns and gardens, terrace, and steps into the Meditteranean Sea. The phone number for the Residence Eiffel and a selection of other hotels and apartments can be found from the Web link provided below for Beaulieu.

Frejus:

You can stay in an apartment overlooking the marketplace and the 10th century Frejus Cathedral at a very reasonable price. A selection of lodging in the old town and in the new Port Frejus vacation complex can be found in Fodor's France.

Fast Facts:

The French Riviera is in the Provence-Alpes-Cote d’Azur region, spanning the Var and Alpes-Maritimes departments. It stretches from St. Tropez north and east to the Italian border with a tremendous variety of coastline, vegetation, small bays, and mountainous terrain. Largely a tourist destination today, the Riviera’s high season runs from June through August. In the more accessible fall season of September and October, average high temperatures range from 70-80 degrees F. Express autoroute, A8, connects the Riviera to the rest of Provence and France. Frequent trains run between St. Raphael and Menton.
