Getting There: A wide range of major airlines fly to London from most major airports in the United States, including American, Air France, British Airways, SAS, and United. The toll-free telephone numbers and Web links are listed on this magazine’s Airlines page. Car rentals are available, but unless you are traveling outside London, a car in the city is more of a liability than an asset. Public transportation and taxis between Heathrow Airport and London are readily available.

Staying There: Travel within London is most easily done via the Underground, or "tube." Stations are usually within a few minutes walk of all major tourist destinations. Walking is also suggested to enjoy the various neighborhoods and moods of this most cosmopolitan city. Guided tours are also available by bus, and from April through October tour boats are available on the Thames. Information on hotels, theater, tours and other activities is available from the main London Tourist Information Center at Victoria Station, Heathrow Airport, and other centers.
